Scholarship Criteria

Only elected officials from townships which belong to the Michigan Townships Association will be considered for a scholarship.

  • Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000, and must be used for attendance at TGA core curriculum (Foundations and/or Boardsmanship) classes within a 3-year timeframe. The amount will be credited in the name of the scholarship recipient within the TGA database and applied to workshop fees for that individual. Any unused fees will be returned to the "Governance in Action" Scholarship Fund.

  • Scholarship funds may not be used toward elective credit.

  • The scholarship is nonrenewable; however, more than one elected official from the same township may apply for a scholarship.

  • The financial need of the township is the key criterion in the awarding of scholarships. Other criteria include: applicant's involvement and service to the township, applicant's interest in the program, and township board and applicant commitment. MTA will not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, religion, creed or origin. Elected officials with a deep commitment to complete the program and who are from townships most in need of financial support for training will be those most likely to receive a scholarship.

  • As the scholarship does not cover the full cost of the program, each scholarship recipient and his/her respective township must agree to be responsible for the balance of any fees, transportation, lodging and miscellaneous expenses that are not covered but are necessary to ensure completion of the Academy.

  • Determination of scholarships will be based upon the written applications and supporting materials that are received at the MTA office by the March 1 deadline for the year in which applied.

  • Upon acceptance of a scholarship, the recipient agrees to allow MTA to use his or her name, image and township to assist in the promotion of the Township Governance Academy.
