Building and Grounds Foreman

Title: Buildings & Grounds Foreman
Reports To: Buildings & Grounds Superintendent
Positions Supervised: Buildings & Grounds Worker - II, Buildings & Grounds Worker - I
Employment Status: Exempt

BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for overseeing maintenance of Township buildings, grounds and cemeteries. Supervises department workers and summer employees. Serves as Safety Director for the Department.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Supervises work assigned full and part-time staff in the maintenance of all parks, grounds, facilities, vehicles and equipment; distributes work schedules to staff based on requests from other Township departments; inspects work in progress and at completion; oversees maintenance of appropriate department records regarding work projects, maintenance performed and inventory of supplies and maintenance materials.

2. Ensures proper equipment is available and used for the protection and safety of staff; prepares written procedures for safe operation of department equipment; prepares accident reports regarding property and equipment damage as well as personal injury incidents.

3. Assists citizens in selecting and locating cemetery lot by referencing lot maps; signs death certificate at time of burial.

4. Acts in behalf of Buildings & Grounds Superintendent in his/her absence.

5. Performs wide variety of construction projects for Township as requested; operates department owned and/or rented equipment; oversees and participates in major mechanical repairs and routine maintenance on trucks and equipment.

6. Orders supplies and building materials for carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities; contacts outside contractors for work not performed by department; reviews time - cards of staff for payroll purposes;

7. Checks periodically on grounds work performed by summer help at Alpine Township parks and cemeteries.

8. Performs other tasks and special projects as requested to facilitate effective operations of the department.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

1. High school completion plus minimum 3 years general construction experience including carpentry, electrical, and mechanical work; such experience requires equivalent to Township Buildings & Grounds Worker II; ability to read schematics, blue-prints and cemetery maps.

2. Communication and interpersonal skills to relate effectively with office staff at all levels, supervise workers, deal with outside vendors, contractors, Township residents, and other representatives from the community at large.

3. Valid drivers license with CDL rating and ability to operate tools and other equipment; ability to organize, prioritize and schedule work to achieve deadlines in an environment where demands for schedule changes and re-prioritizing work occurs frequently.

4. Prolonged standing, bending, stooping and stretching required; manual dexterity to operate and use various tools, devices and equipment; physical agility to walk, climb into confined spaces; may occasionally involve working with chemicals; requires working outdoors frequently during all seasons and all weather conditions; lifting construction materials, supplies and equipment weighing minimum 75 pounds.
