Fire Captain
Title: Captain Reports To: Fire Chief Positions Supervised: Equipment Operator - II, Equipment Operator - I, Paid On-Call Fire Fighters, Reserves Employment Status: Exempt
BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for acquisition, testing and maintenance of all fire department equipment. Also responsible for managing full time equipment operators and part time fire-fighters.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Ensures that all Township fire fighting and medical/rescue equipment are properly maintained and operationally available at all times; establishes policies and procedures regarding proper operation and maintenance of all equipment; prepares and provides Fire Chief various department reports regarding equipment repairs and maintenance.
2. Develops daily work schedule and provides direct supervision for full time equipment operators; ensures that schedules provide adequate staffing and coverage; develops duty roster and schedule for paid on-call and reserve fire-fighters.
3. Researches, evaluates and recommends purchases of new equipment and supplies; submits recommendations to Township Public Safety Committee.
4. Develops standard operating procedures for safe operation of fire fighting equipment and medical/rescue apparatus; maintains policy and procedures for accident and injury reporting; recommends changes regarding policies to Township Fire Department Officer Board; assists at training meetings regarding proper/safe operation of equipment.
5. Oversees tests of all fire fighting equipment and medical/rescue equipment; ensures compliance with established insurance standards; provides reports to Fire Chief and Fire Officer Board regarding test results and corresponding recommendations as applicable.
6. Responds to fire and medical/rescue calls; operates equipment during emergency calls as necessary; ensures fire fighters at scene are operating equipment in a safe manner; oversees clean-up operations and activities after incident calls; assists Township in responding to emergency situations.
7. Assists Fire Chief in providing fire prevention education involving equipment operation/ demonstrations, etc., to constitutes; assists in explaining and enforcing fire ordinances.
8. Performs various other tasks as directed by the Fire Chief.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
1. High school diploma required and Associates degree in Fire Science preferred; requires minimum 8 years experience in fire suppression, prevention, training and administration including serving at least 2 years as Lieutenant; knowledge of relevant laws, ordinances, and codes also important.
2. Communication skills to effectively lead fire fighters and to work effectively with Township personnel at all levels; also requires dealing effectively and representing the department with equipment and supply vendors, residents and interacting with the public to obtain necessary information regarding fire/emergency incidents.
3. Organizational, managerial, and leadership skills required; ability to secure and maintain State certifications in Fire Fighter I and II, and medical license as First Responder necessary; certification as Fire Officer II and completion of Haz- Mat training necessary; knowledge of National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) code, Building Officials Code (BOCA), and comprehensive understanding of modern fire fighting equipment.
4. Ability to work in all weather conditions and occasionally in extremely hazardous conditions; must be able to climb/move ladders and work effectively at scene of emergency which may involve significant physical exertion; valid drivers license and completion of FFTC drivers course or maintains a CDL rating; occasionally requires lifting heavy fire/rescue equipment and supplies weighing minimum 70 pounds.
