Arcada Township (Gratiot Co.) Supervisor Doug Merchant, 2014 president of the Michigan Townships Association (MTA), received the “MTA Life Member” Award during the Association’s Annual Conference & Expo, held April 1-4 in Grand Rapids. Merchant received the honor before more than 1,000 township peers at the MTA Banquet, held April 3 in conjunction with the Conference.
“I want to thank the Association for the honor of allowing me to serve the Board,” Merchant said. “It has been my honor to help the Association to provide better services and additional value to our townships, and I will always hold this experience dear.”
In 2006, Merchant was elected MTA District 16 director by area township officials to represent Gratiot, Ionia and Montcalm Counties on the MTA Board of Directors.
Merchant has served as supervisor of Arcada Township since 1989. Prior to this, he served as a township trustee for two years. He is a Michigan Certified Assessing Officer, serving Arcada, Bethany and Pine River Townships. He has also served on numerous boards and committees, including the Gratiot County Farm Bureau, Ithaca High School’s Future Farmers of America, Gratiot County’s GIS Committee, Alma Airport Authority Board, Ithaca Fire Board and Alma Fire Board, and the Ithaca Lions Club.
Merchant and his wife, Mary, have four sons and seven grandchildren.
